  7. This past weekend, some friends and I undertook a "bongineering" project.
  8.  
  9. We designed and built a "hookah" -- a multi-user water bong.
  10.  
  11. Since the result was very sucessful, I've decided to post the design in
  12. hope that fellow travelers will benefit....

  43. This design requires no stoppers or valves -- it uses water pressure
  44. differences to effect a one-way valve. The main requirement is that
  45. the water levels in the secondary chambers are higher than the water
  46. level in the primary chamber.  This allows the bong to work even
  47. without every "service station" occupied!
  48.  
  49. Starting from this basic design, we actually built an slighlty
  50. enhanced version.  It had a total of 4 service stations (i.e. 4
  51. secondary chambers), as well as well as an extra buffer chamber
  52. between the primary chamber and each secondary chamber.  This beast
  53. had a total of 9  2-liter bottles arranged in a diamond pattern!  The tubes
  54. from the primary chambers to the buffer chambers to the secondary chambers
  55. were very short, but the tubes from the the secondary chambers to the users
  56. were very long (4 to 6 feet).  This allows for mobile or remote operation.

  59. Hints:
  60.  
  61. 1)  Use large-diameter (3/8 inch internal), (clear) plastic tubing.
  62.     This reduces air resistance and makes sucking easier.
  63.  
  64. 2)  To make the holes in the bottles for the tubing, the following
  65.     procedure worked well for us:
  66.     Use a hot pointed object to first melt a small hole in the plastic bottles.
  67.     (A very small phillips screwdriver held under a lighter for a few
  68.     seconds works great.)
  69.     Slowly twist a screwdriver/drill/pliers/knife to gradually increase
  70.     the diameter of the hole.  Stop when the diameter of the hole is
  71.     slightly less than the outer-diameter of the tubing. This will allow an 
  72.     air-tight seal.

  74.     This same technique works for making the holes in the top of the
  75.     plastic bottle-caps.
  76.  
  77. 3)  If possible, use even larger tubing for the bowl tube in the
  78.     primary chamber.  This tube is the primary "bottleneck" for
  79.     entering smoke, and the bigger this is, the easier it is to suck.

  82. The results were fantastic.  At first, the users didn't think they
  83. were getting anything, since the smoke was greatly cooled by the dual
  84. water chambers.  As a result, they sucked even harder....  A few
  85. minutes later, they were orbiting Pluto... :-)

  87. This was definetly a big hit (no pun intended :) with everyone...
